The signs on the back of taxis in Mumbai never cease to amuse me. I wonder if that’s the sole reason they’re there - to amuse? Or is it something deeper?

Like the sign* that said “Don’t Miss Me” - did the taxi guy break up with the love of his life because of her parents not allowing it? Was he sad when he stuck the “Don’t Miss Me” sign on the back of his cab? Did he do it specifically because he wanted to appear that he was cool enough to let go & say “Don’t Miss Me” though all he wanted to say was “Please don’t go - or if you do go, come back - or at the least, miss me to death?” (And PS: If you do miss me, I’ll be somewhere between Chembur, Panvel & Thane. Just to shorten the search for you)

Sometimes I ponder these thoughts (yes I’m weird that way). More often than not, I realise it’s probably some idiot’s idea of a wise crack -> I‘m faster than you because I’m in front of you (because you’re viewing the rear of the taxi) & I’m gonna be outta here soon - Don’t Miss Me.

As for me, I prefer my romantic interpretations to the wannabe amusing ones. Even as I post the picture that started this post, I promise to keep posting more pics as and when I find more taxis with stories flashed on their behinds.

Feel free to send in a picture for a free-of-cost interpretation. melodysvoice(at)gmail.com

*The One that Started it All:

Don’t Miss Me

“Oh God send your blessings, the way I drive, my passengers really need it”

While the rest of us still vary between saying Mumbai & Bombay,
this guy’s come up with a solution for himself:

  1. Wonder if you have seen cabs with number plates that start with MCP.

  2. Maybe he meant to say “Dont miss me. I’m such a big target”

Cab drivers suck bigtime. Duping people is their bloody profession. Any way this is my first comment on your blog, although I have been closely following ur blog since a few monce.

  5. @ dkd903: Yes, I agree, there are lots of issues wrt taxis, taxi drivers and their driving that need to be addressed. But the signs still amuse me lots!
