A new report by consulting firm Ernst & Young (we’ll call them E&Y) pits the nations capital Delhi (hah!) versus the highest paying tax city Mumbai (what you didn’t know where all the money we earn goes?) and 46 other cities - and guess what? Delhi (huh!) comes out on top.
Yup, that’s what the headlines in the Times of India (TNN 28 Sept 07) screams: “Delhi, not Mum, best city to live in: Survey”
We’d like to point out, that E&Y never contacted us* while doing their report (*us here refers basically to me and all the voices in my head). If they did, well let’s just say, their findings would be VERY DIFFERENT from the present.
For starters, let me point out that it was Greater Mumbai (Navi Mumbai) in the survey, not our good old fashioned amchi regularly old-is-gold Mumbai.
The report apparently “took into consideration 57 parameters” before arriving at their erroneous conclusion. I propose we examine some of their parameters and add our take on it. Shall we? Yes, do lets:
(#1) Between Delhi and Greater Mumbai, the national capital takes the lead on city prosperity index due to its lower population and hence higher per capita income. - Well naturally! Delhi (hah!) is the land of all the politicians. There are hardly any visible slums there because multitudes of illegal Bangladeshi vote banks aren’t allowed to camp outside big ministers house. With tons of extra population that’s allowed to live in our city for all the wrong reasons, is it any surprise the “city prosperity index” will be higher in Delhi (hah!)? Huh!
Besides, we’re also talking about per capita income here. So let’s see - between the millions the beggars on the roads make and the millions the minister chors in office make, it’s no surprise Delhi (hah!) comes out on top again. Double hah, hah!
(#2) “Delhi also indicates greater propensity to save earnings” - Well that’s only because we in Mumbai are big hearted people. We like to party & we like to party with our friends. In nice cars and at nice places. We don’t hoard all our ill-gotten-gains like some people (read Delhi-iets (hah!) do). What? Delhi-ites (hah!) spend twice as much as money as the Mumbaikers do you say?? Yeah, well don’t forget they’re twice as corrupt, getting twice as much as we do, spending slightly more than we do & hoarding the rest. Hence the “more savings” bit. Hah! I say, hah!

(#3) “The consultancy firm’s findings were unveiled by Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy” - who is a Delhi-ite (hah!) Did we just smell a rat? “…at the Ficci-organised International Real Estate Summit” - and guess where FICCI’s main quarters are - yup, Delhi (hah!). A big, fat, black rat.
(#4) “Delhi out scored all other cities as it has a large workforce and more number of management graduates”
- Oh puh-lease. You, Delhi (hah!) can keep your IIMs. We’ve got Bollywood (or didn’t you know?!) We have all the countries most number of item number, belly shaking, ass jirating, teeny clothes wearing, 6-pack abs bearing, shirt removing, filmy non graduates in the country. Heck, make that, the WORLD. We are the world, we are the city. We are the ones who make Bollywood movies, so just shut up your face.
(#5) “Delhi has arguably the best infrastructure in India. It has out-performed almost all cities on all the indicators that comprised the infrastructure index” - Yes of course it does. Did you not read #1? Delhi has all the corrupt politicians who make sure their roads are ok. And what about us? What about the roads on the highest tax paying city in the country? No, no one cares about us. And you dare to blame us for not having good infrastructure? I say E&Y should have minus-ed 100 points from Delhi (hah!) instantly for the state Mumbai’s infrastructure is in.
In the meanwhile, E&Y, how are the parameter of terrible driving? Sure we have Alister Pereira, but Delhi (hah!) has buses being driven on the wrong side of the road, hit & run accidents (mostly by politicians or their relatives) almost daily and a multitude of other road accidents. What about that eh??
And what about (pulling out trump card), what about the SAFETY issue, yeah, yeah?? What about it?
Are not women in Mumbai safer than women in Delhi (hah!)?? Are women in Delhi (hah!) able to walk around, wear what they like and not fear gang-rape even during broad daylight?? Sure we have our fair share of eve-teasers and sicko perverts, but it can’t compare to the land of gang-raping jungi faltus from Delhi (hah!).
And don’t we in Mumbai love each other? Aren’t we a strong city with our people carrying on regardless of bomb blasts, train blasts, riots, floods? Aren’t we the fifth most honest city in the world?? Seriously E&Y, you should have checked Delhi (hah!) and it’s filthy corrupt politicians for honesty, because then for sure Delhi (hah!) would be last in the list.
You know what I’d tell you if you told me that Delhi (hah!) was the best place to live in India? I’d say HAH! I’d say HAH! on your face, with lots of spittle spewing from my mouth. HaH! Hah! and Double Hah!!

CAVEAT: Before all my readers from Delhi slam me in the face with facts that can prove everything I’ve written above to be utter crap, note, that this post is filed under my ‘Temporary Insanity’ section.
However, the title is true, between Delhi and Mumbai, I’d choose Mumbai every time, so sue me. (Just not for anything above the caveat)

I think you’ve misunderstood the bit about Greater Mumbai (which is all the bits of Bombay exluding Navi Mumbai and some other areas… see http://portal.mcgm.gov.in/).
Otherwise I agree with you completely. I think the only area in which Delhi scores is the infrastructure and being a union territory allowed to govern itself and also being the national capital helps. I must confess I’ve never actually been to Delhi though - the stories I’ve heard about how hard it is for women there haven’t made me want to go.
October 3rd, 2007 at 8:01 am
I see you hate Delhi, so much… the only reason I share your sentiments is Delhi geogrpahy (one more point) is all on in concentric circles, while Mumbai is straight lines.
Therefore Delhi Geogrpahy is confusing and Mumbai is sinple and easy to travel and get hold of a cab and tell him, Colaba. The cabwalla will go by the meter.
Once in Delhi, you say Connaught Place, the autowalla agrees. Then ask how much, and then you bargain with him. That is where I hate Delhi, bargaining for travelling.

You know the real estate mantra - location, location, location. Bombay has the sea! And Delhi, well, they have my condolences.
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:05 am
I am in Delhi yaar! Theres nothing great abt Delhi… I love Mumbai better. Except big cars and bigger roads, theres nothing in Delhi. Mumbai is so full of life! idhar kuchh nahi hai!
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:24 am
Here goes another Delhi vs Mumbai fight
Frankly speaking, both cities have their pros and cons. Personally, give me Delhi’s food, Mumbai’s night life, Delhi’s roads, Mumbai’s traffic sense, Delhi’s houses, Mumbai’s sea, and I won’t complain at all
October 3rd, 2007 at 12:12 pm
Aye Aye melody……i dont agree with everything u’ve said against delhi, but abs agree with everything u’ve said pro mumbai. Despite being filthy, crowded and difficult to live in, it is simply the BESTEST city in the world!!!!
October 3rd, 2007 at 2:03 pm
I love your temporary insanity posts! You’re crazy!

Hey that’s actually good news for me, isn’t it? Will miss Bombay no doubt but I figured, what the heck, Bombay isn’t going anywhere.
October 4th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Goa rawks! anytime
mumbai and delhi dont even stand a chance.
heh.
October 4th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
It’s just classic for people who aren’t very familiar with Delhi to think that politicians are hoarding every corner of the city. Having better roads and infrastructure is a lot more than being a Minister and then getting better stuff built for yourself. And you think there are no Bangladeshis in Delhi? We have Bihari immigrants..and lots of them, which is why the women get raped. And honestly, I think this whole thing of Mumbai’s spirit after terror attacks is really over-rated. Every city does that, what else are you going to do? Sit at home and not feed your family because you’re too scared of blasts on the roads? It’s suffered the most on this count but there are many places who react the same way to terror but the heroic tag is not put on them. And for Bollywood being an advantage, I just have nothing to say to that. If having an industry that hoards money and puts out crap on to the public is doing good for a city, then let’s just hug the politicians next time.
October 4th, 2007 at 9:59 pm
well…its funny how easy it is to choose one city over another with so much ease
mumbai is indeed a good city, great to be in. i have spent some time there and i must say that mumbai does rock!
but having stayed in Delhi/NCR for more than the last 3 yrs i can say that delhi isn’t as bad as mumbaikars might think it to be.
Come over to delhi, and spend some time here. I am sure u’ll like delhi too
October 5th, 2007 at 4:26 am
@littlelostgirl, you seem to have ‘lost’ the spirit of the piece which was simply to have a little fun and rattle up a little Mumbai pride.
You can have your views (and some of them seem a little racist hmm). Hopefully most people from Delhi should take pride in the place and hopefully they would not want to move to Mumbai, because frankly, the last thing Mumbaikars want is a whole bunch of Delhiites coming their way!! Hah!
Get a sense of humour missy!
October 5th, 2007 at 10:03 am
@lostgul.. could i dare to say u r mean?
sorry.
but do u see the spirit in this article? she is loving her city… and this is her blog!.
and its in our blood.. we are human who gets attached to the place and surrounding we live in. EVERY city and even small village.. i would say a small house in a DIRTY slum is better than everything as far as the person is satisfied and attached with it! Its about - emotions, girl.
take this discussion to broader level.. say.. difference between India and US? now would u say India is nothing (sorry mother India) compared to US? may be.. but India is what we would favour no matter wt!.
talking about rape, u r crossing the limits.
October 5th, 2007 at 3:49 pm
Heh! I was surprised to Delhi on the top too, especially since I moved out of that city for a for variety of reasons including the appalling situation with safety (esp, related to women) and the summer heat.
That said, I do think Mumbai’s traffic jams, the Maharashtra govt’s ineptitude to improve infrastructure in the city, and the barely functioning airport (did you read about the 10 mins of power failure of the entire airport system incl. radars today?) do not make one very proud of this city.
But there indeed is something about the city that is very unique and lovable. A combination of the people, it’s unique ethos, its history…
October 5th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Oi.. Delhi isn’t dat bad!! It’s quite nice u knw.. except for the blueline buses and crime factor (female specific), apart from that I never found anything to complain for in Delhi!!
As for Mumbai… somehow I cannot tolerate the crowded locals, and the humidity.. though Delhi will soon catch up there… apart from that… ummmm… nothing much I guess…
the rest I find and IMO is same for both the cities…. it’s the same set of people everywhere.. different jobs do not change their essence… this is what is so common about all big cities in a country!! So… stop cribbing!!
Hell.. I hardly belong to any city… so let’s say I like Delhi/Mumbai (same rating from me) oveer Pune over Kolkata (my hometown)
October 6th, 2007 at 6:24 am
Just came to your blog wandering around and saw the Mumbai post.. I am not an original Mumbaikar but so what I chose to live here after moving to Matrabhumi.. Mumbai is cool and Bandra is the besht!!!
Though I belong to nowhere and everywhere but yeah Mumbai rocks. It’s like any international city which does not accept you easily but once it does, it doen’t let you go!!
October 7th, 2007 at 2:01 am
In my opinion I think Mumbai is a better city just because it treats its women better(by and large) even though Delhi has transformed itself in terms of infrastructure, pollution control etc. in the last 10 years or so.
October 7th, 2007 at 3:36 am
October 7th, 2007 at 9:08 am
finally its been said… of course bbay rocks! i mean it has the sea, how can anyone beat that!
October 8th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
I am a total mumbaikar and will have to move to Delhi now. I’m dreading it absolutely
In fact I was searching for reassurance that Delhi is not so terrible and hence bumped on this page. Guys tell me is Delhi so terrible? I’m a true-blood Mumbaikar, I love my 5-star brunch buffets but hate having to dress up to get in, hate show-sha and all the flamboyance that Delhi epitomises. Pls tell me there’s hope
Having spent 20 years in Bandra I cannot quite sound respectful while speaking in Hindi and have no bargaining skills what-so-ever and have relied 100% on public transport (as a policy in fact). Please someone tell me there’s hope for people like me in Delhi…
October 8th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
@Razzmatazz : Delhi is OK; not as great as Bombay. Beware of taxi and rickshaw drivers; they will literarily take you for a ride. If you have a late night party, be sure to have food stocked.
There are many good ancient place to visit. Some of the areas in N. Delhi are really great.
Old Delhi is great for food.
October 11th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
@ Moksh: Believe it or not, I don’t hate Delhi, lol after this silly post I don’t blame you for thinking I do though! Thought I wouldn’t want to live there, I admit there are good things about Delhi too - but I can’t believe it topped aamchi Mumbai as a place to live in though!
@ Clement:
@ M: lol, good one!
@ Naresh: Vapas ah jao toh!
@ Manpreet: “Frankly speaking, both cities have their pros and cons. Personally, give me Delhi’s food, Mumbai’s night life, Delhi’s roads, Mumbai’s traffic sense, Delhi’s houses, Mumbai’s sea, and I won’t complain at all”
Don’t ask for much do ya?! I like your spirit
@ Ana: “it is simply the BESTEST city in the world!!!!” Amen!!
@ Shub: “I love your temporary insanity posts! You’re crazy!”
erm, YES
@ inexile: “Awww so cute !! cushioning it!” What to do, am a funk
PS: Miss you! Sigh.
@ Anumita: I’ll drink to that too! {hic}
October 11th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
@ R. Bhavesh:
@ Vijay: Where do you bees? We MUSTEST meet before you vamoosest
@ Dragon: Yup, must concede Goa does so totally rock!! Still, I couldn’t stay there for too long without getting susegad!
@ lostlittlegirl: Don’t sweat it, it’s was mostly in jest. About your though “We have Bihari immigrants..and lots of them, which is why the women get raped”
I have two very close Bihari friends & I resent the racist remark.
@ Ashish: “well…its funny how easy it is to choose one city over another with so much ease”
True dat!! And thx for the invite, may take you up on that soon
@ IC & R. Bhavesh: Thx for the explainations, glad to know most people got the spirit of this post.
@ Shantanu: Yes, I was surprised too, for the exact same reason.
@ Sam: “I hardly belong to any city” Cute! I belong to Mumbai though, and Mumbai belongs to me
@ Hemant Jain: “Mumbai is cool and Bandra is the besht!!!”
Completely, totally, completely totally agree with you
And welcome to TVIMH! Cya around!
@ gigo: Yes, agree with you on that.
@ Cow Shal: Passionate is my middle name
@ gps: “finally its been said… ”
And it was TVIMH that said it. {Bows}
@ Razzmatazz: “I am a total mumbaikar and will have to move to Delhi now. I’m dreading it absolutely”
Oops Sorry!! Don’t worry, Delhi’s not as bad as I made out. Find yourself a good group of friends and places you like & take care of yourself. A positive mental attitude will help you most of all. It’s not where we live, it’s how we live at the end of the day. Make the most of it!
@ Lancy: And let’s not forget it’s close to Agra, so visiting the Taj is a big plus point.
October 12th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

October 15th, 2007 at 8:45 pm
And lol to you finding your friend here! What are the odds?!
@ Shivaranjan: Yes, it is rather jam packed. And filthy. And can be horribly noisy and hot. But heck, it’s home & I love it.

Hey Anyday Capital is a better place to live
Capital people especially punjabis and all they are very very enjoyable ,,but i have seen both mumbai and delhi there are many many posistivs abt delhi. here u can get the feeling of all weathers ,, not like mumbai ( hot hotter hottest)
here u will see lush green posh colonies not like mumbai dabba flats,, what abt that over crowded local .. i dont even think to compare with delhi metro which is a constriction marvel.
and what abt beauty ,, anyday delhhites more beautiful ( these noth indians are really very beautiful)
what abt mumbai slums and “kuda karkat”…
delhi is very very happening .. what i feel ..
and debate goes on ,,,
whenever i go to mumbai ,, mumbaikars always says about delhi mumbai comparison ( like they are scared or u can say chor ki dadi main tinka )
Delhi attarts maximum FDI in whole country ,, out of 2000 MNC’s openend shops in india in 2006 delhi attracted 1267..
No of cars in delhi= mumbai + calcitta + madras + bangalore.. still delhi’s traffic runs fast due to good infrastructure .. nit like mumbai third class roads ( o sorry what about Floods?).
Capital scores better if u compare all parameters.. Mumbai also has it positives as its financial hub..
But anyday delhi is indeed a better place to live

December 9th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
This whole idea about mumbia’s tax contribution is all nonsense. The fact is many indian corporates have head offices in mumbai, but have operations all over india and the world. I have seen facteries in assam where the workers are local the mangers are from all over india.
There are many state governments who have done well , so why cant it happen in mumbai.how long does it take to stop illegal construction, unplanned growth etc.

February 11th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Shabbash beti and all the people in this forum. Not a single one of you have mentioned that the map of India is completely wrong. For all the struggle of our freedom fighters in Kashmir, in one instant you have gladly, happily given everything to Pakistan.
You talk about Mumbai and Delhi beti but what about India? I know it is not related but do spare a thought for those young soldiers fighting it out there. Surely, they don’t deserve to see this. Indeed it is true what they say in the army - all the sacrifices are for nothing when you see today’s generation. Sad. Really sad.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
However I think you misjudge my generation if you think we do not respect the army and it’s role in both protecting and fighting for our country. I know a lot of people who are very proactive in their support for the army. And an error like the one I made is only that - an error - and not a statement of my / my generation’s beliefs with regards to the Kashmir issue.
February 12th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Thank you Ma’am. I believe you.
It would be some relief, however, if you could kindly please either put a new map or at least put some disclaimer text in your blog so that those senior citizens (such as myself) and those from the army could at least find some relief that indeed this generation values the army. A very small gesture from you could mean a lot to oldies like me. Thank you.

Jealous Mumbaiya! How many posts do u find like these from Delhites.
You dont like E&Y?? search on Forbes Delhi is 157 Top City in the world while Mumbai is 243.
Based on a lot or parameters.
Heres more Mumbai is dirtier than delhi
http://in.ibtimes.com/articles.....london.htm
I realised that as soon as I landed in the stink!!
Oh! and apparently Mumbai police is daft http://www.rediff.com/news/2003/sep/01inter.htm
There’s lot more articles available, I’m sure u know Google.
Delhi is better than Mumbai in about 90% areas.
Saying that according to world standards we are both crap. So Id suggest we stop this irrelevant argument and try to make our cities better from a world’s point of view.
I hope you don’t have the fake Marathi Mubaiya pride.
September 19th, 2008 at 11:04 am

Raj Thackeray Mumbai Special…
We all should support Raj Thackeray and Mumbaiites take his following initiatives ahead:
1. We should teach our kids that if he is second in class, don’t study harder.. just beat up the student coming first and throw him out of the school
2. Parliament should have only Delhiites as it is located in Delhi
3. Prime-minister, president and all other leaders should only be from Delhi
4. No Hindi movie should be made in Bombay . Only Marathi.
5. At every state border, buses, trains, flights should be stopped and staff changed to local men
6. All Maharashtrians working abroad or in other states should be sent back as they are SNATCHING employment from Locals
7. Lord Shiv, Ganesha and Parvati should not be worshiped in our state as they belong to north( Himalayas )
8. Visits to Taj Mahal should be restricted to people from UP only
9. Relief for farmers in Maharashtra should not come from centre because that is the money collected as Tax from whole of India , so why should it be given to someone in Maharashtra ?
10. Let’s support Kashmiri Militants because they are right in killing and injuring innocent people for the benefit of their state and community..
11. Let’s throw all MNCs out of Maharashtra , why should they earn from us? We will open our own Maharashtra Microsoft, MH Pepsi and MH Marutis of the world
12. Let’s stop using cellphones, emails, TV, foreign Movies and dramas.
13. James Bond should speak Marathi - good one.
14. We should be ready to die hungry or buy food at 10 times higher price but should not accept imports from other states
15. We should not allow any industry to be setup in Maharashtra because all machinery comes from outside
16. We should STOP using local trains… Trains are not manufactured by Marathi manoos and Railway Minister is a Bihari
17. Ensure that all our children are born, grow, live and die without ever stepping out of Maharashtra ,then they will become true Marathis
JAI MUMBAI
