Yes, Alister Pereira, thank you.

Because of you, my non-Catholic friends tell me how my “jathwala” has stopped them from drinking and driving for fear of being caught at any of the endless checks for drunk driving throughout the city.

Because of you, 5,705 people have been caught (& punished) for Drunken Driving between June 20th & September 25 this year.

Because of you, 967 people have been jailed for Drunken Driving between June 20th & September 25 this year.

Because of you, INR 1 Crore in fines (Rs. 100,00,000/-) has been collected in the same period.

Because of you, 901 people have had their licenses suspended.

Because of you, the numbers of road accident related deaths have fallen, from:
60 in June to
38 in July to
9 in August.

Do I think you need to be punished Alister Pereira? Yes, you killed 7 people, I think you definitely need to.

But I also wonder why regulations were not always this tough?
I wonder why it takes a horrific act to produce action?
I wonder why we wait until it’s too late for some, to sit and and do what always should have been done?
Surely in spirit, there are others who shoulder the blame for the 7 deaths along with Alister - for all they did not do?

Incidentally, for all those who’ve stopped drink driving only because of tougher regulations, here’s another reason to stop - because it doesn’t always kill.
