The very name Varanasi conjures up images of the word “Holiness” for most Indians.

However when I think of Varanasi I remember all the controversy over Deepa Mehta’s film “Water”.

It still makes me wonder, that in a land of “free speech” and “liberty of thought and expression” why people react so negatively to things they do not agree with.

Are we so narrow minded that we cannot agree to disagree with others?

Why is it that films today still have to go through rigid censor boards? And that other films are completely banned?

Isn’t this a violation of our basic right to freedom? Isn’t this a violation of our basic right to choose?
