Recently there have been one too many “Controversies” in the local news.

Not talking about the type that surrounded the verdict for Alister Pereira - the controversy over that is understandable.

But seriously people have we got NO OTHER WORK than to:

(01) Harass Richard Gere for kissing Shilpa Shetty on the cheek as he mimicked a dance move - as a parody on the film “Shall We Dance”. Though the actor has apologized, there’s still a big hoopla about it all. I’m sure international stars are all dying to come to India to help with humanitarian work after this.

(02) Accuse Liz Hurley & Arun Nayar utilising the Hindu marriage to spread Christianity“! And all because they “drank alcohol, wore leather shoes and behaved inappropriately by kissing in front of cameras” - at their wedding. That may breaching Hindu customs (I honestly wouldn’t know) but in what way does it spread Christianity??? Seriously??! And just for my information, here’s a question to y’all - Doesn’t everyone kiss their spouse on their wedding day?

(03) Berate Mandira Bedi for wearing the “Indian colours in a disrespectful manner”. Granted it went against the ruling of the Indian Government which had “cleared wearing of images of the Indian Tricolour on clothing in 2005, but had ruled that the flag can only be displayed on garments above the waist”. Nevertheless, is this seriously something we should harp on about? Especially since the lady in question changed the garment mid-innings break & apologized on live TV for the mistake?

Bravo to the Indian Media who highlight these important issues rather than the petty one’s like the woman who was gang-raped in Delhi’s Palika Bazar in broad daylight yesterday while trying to shop for clothes.

  1. some people are just so narrow minded

    1) shilpa and richard Gere issue should have not even come to light let alone all the court case and summons. hurts to see how backwards we still are

    2) arun and Liz wedding was the way they wanted and it was not a religious event to spread any sort of religion so that should stop right there. My wife kissed me at my wedding and we are hindu and we did a hindu wedding in india.

    3) no clue what the mandira bedi issue was so not comments

but just cant everyone please grow up a bit. what do u think melody. am i not right

  2. haha. i can hear the hollywood herd heading east as we speak..haha.

  3. abt “here’s a question to y’all - Doesn’t everyone kiss their spouse on their wedding day?”

In India : NO ! , my observation from the wedding I have been to. In Hindu and Muslim weddings its definitely *No No*. Been to a Christian wedding too, there too after the “I do”, there was no “You may kiss the bride” !

Its a cultural thing in India I guess. We are not comfortable kissing in public and seeing others do it.

  4. 1. The Richard Gere kiss was anything but mimicking a dance move - please! The way he jumped her, it looked like he was drunk or whacked out with dope. Had it been a lesser being like Mika, I’m sure the lady bloggers (or any blogger) would’nt have been as forgiving. While theres nothing wrong with a kiss, I thought it was in poor taste - esp with the mwah-mwah-slurp-slurp happening at an AIDS function in front of an audience that’d only whistle and hoot. I agree the media hype and the court case is overkill but its equally amusing to see everyone defending Gere and his desperate-looking pawing.

    2. no…everyone doesnt kiss their spouse on the wedding day..or night..in public..in India. I remember an Israeli couple who got married in the Brahma temple at Pushkar, getting arrested for an after-marriage liplock: http://disjointedoutpourings.b.....-time.html
But again, the charges of ’spreading Christianity’ are super frivolous and only tell us what stupid depths these right wing idiots have sunk to.

    3. The woman who was raped in Palika Bazar - the entire case may even be a frameup since she has apparently falsely framed people twice previously: http://cities.expressindia.com.....sid=234167

  5. @ Tulan: “some people are just so narrow minded” Unfortunately, yes.

@ Rahul: Nice place you have! Will visit more often!

@ Ravi: Thx for the link. And you’re probably right, it must be a cultural thing. But you must admit, like Raccoon says in the comment below yours “the charges of ’spreading Christianity’ are super frivolous and only tell us what stupid depths these right wing idiots have sunk to.”

    @ Raccoon:
    1. Did see “Shall we Dance” and the it’s pretty much the same thing. I don’t think he looked drunk or “whacked out” in any way. And believe it or not - have not arrived at this conclusion because he’s not a “lesser being” (lol!!) like Mika. That case was different since Rakhi complained. If Shilpa complained perhaps this could have merited being considered “news”, definitely not the way things stand.

    2. Thanks for the information, didn’t know the earlier part (hence I asked). And agree with you on the latter.

    3. Interesting, didn’t see this bit. Helps me shake off a bit of the bad impression I’ve formed about how unsafe Delhi is for women.

  6. @ Mel: I do !
