One of the things I miss most in Mumbai are the freehand painted hoardings we used to see all over before flex came about.
Some of them very good, some were so-so but all of them were brilliant when one thought of the way they reproduced off a photograph onto a 20 foot x 20 foot hoarding with great likeness - enough for everyone to identify all the actors!

As I pay tribute to a truly fantastic rangoli artist I met (& watched in action) yesterday (see my new page “The Evolution of a Rangoli“) I cannot help but remember all these brilliantly talented people who perhaps are a dying breed.

Its true, film poster painters are much better artists but they don’t have the fame for there art. Rs.100 for a hard poster whereas MF Hussain gets Lacs for his UpsideDown paintings.
And those rangolis, great find - love them!

Yes! 1 portrait of bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit by MF Hussain sold for 15 Cr. INR which is HUGE!

Well, truth be told, I’d have loved to see my face in rangoli - he said he’d do “every hair on my head in the right color” but because it was part of an official event I couldn’t go around displaying my face for all & sundry (boo-hoo, next time?)
@ Rishi: He also made headlines with the Rs 100-crore (Rs 1 billion) deal for 125 paintings he signed with Mumbai-based Swarup Group of Industries

There are a few painters around. You will find them at any of the many studios around Mumbai, Chennai, painting sets.
