I have this friend. Recently he’s caught a bug. A YouTube bug.

Suddenly almost every post of his has a YouTube video. Some posts have more than one. And if all that’s not enough, there’s now a special ‘Video Watch’ section in the left column dedicated especially to just that.

And while I still enjoy his blog - I just can’t get myself around to YouTubing (if that indeed is a word). So, without further ado, I present to you, the:

Reasons I don’t

(01) Indian ISPs: I have lamented about that sorry state of the many ISPs I’ve have the misfortune of using. I finally got the one I’m using now - and it’s fine (so far, so good, fingers crossed). But still, it’s not like it’s heaven for YouTube (or any other videos online).

(02) Limited Connection: Well I have what’s called a “12pm - 8am unlimited download” connection but that means I have to surf beween those hours to have unlimited downloads. Any downloads done in normal waking hours eats into my limited connection. Yup, and that’s outta my pretty pocket. And correct me if I’m wrong - but videos eat a lot of broadband.

(03) I’m already addicted to the internet: I know this kinda sounds like a silly reason not to YouTube - it’s almost like I’m saying I know I will love it therefore I’m staying away from it. Hang on, that’s IS what I’m saying. I’m scared of getting addicted to it. I have no more time to give to the internet, between my blogs & my sites & the other surfing - So, I’m Just Saying No.

(04)I’m Old Fashioned: when it comes to TV anyway. I really prefer watching TV on TV. I don’t know. Sue me. As for other people’s videos I’m not really sure I want to go there yet.

So this is what I do. I don’t YouTube. Before any of you sensible ones who read this imagine I’m even partially suggesting / touting / preaching to you to not watch the videos on YouTube, I’m not. All I’m saying is that I don’t.

The Sept 06 cover of The New Yorker showed how much YouTube has become a part of the new generation’s daily life. I guess by the amazing popularity of the site, I probably form a miniscule part of the internet addicted who don’t YouTube. For now anyway.

  1. Hey melodious, One of the many curses of Indias slow development is the deployment of broadband in this country. Imagine doing a whole lot of things for a whole rate cheaper and a whole speed better. I too am off YouTube even though I have broadband, firstly no time to infiltrate into other peoples lives, not worth watching and its been bought by the Googles,so its no longer the open expression zone it used to be.
Guess I am writing in your blog after long, hope u remember this guy from Goa >>:)

  2. I sooooo identify wid da reasons… I\’m a un-youtuber myself… even with an unlimited bandwidth, pretty decent connection.
If I want to watch moving pictures, I\’d rather go to a movie, thanks. :D

  3. The internet connection is the only thing that prevents me from being a full time YouTube user. However, when i\’m looking for any video, that\’s the first place I check out!

  4. I think YouTube has its own benefits. I found many long forgotten movie scenes and song videos and event videos in YouTube. And many many more. :-)

I am planning to make a blogumentary pretty soon and going to use YouTube. I think it is a useful tool to showcase your stuff to the world.

PS: I do not prefer to post personal videos to YouTube.

    PPS: How are you? :-)

  5. @ Dev: :) I prefer the movies too!

@ Jo: “I think YouTube has its own benefits.” Absolutely - no arguments there.

Ans to the PPS: Doing well thank you! It’s great to hear from you after so long, will come by your place soon!

  6. I don\’t watch YouTube, but mainly because I run one of those rare Operating Systems on which Flash doesn\’t work. My guess is that even if I did have flash, I probably wouldn\’t watch most of the videos that I was told to watch.

I do however upload my own videos. No, not stuff that has me in them, but videos that I\’ve shot myself. Weird stuff really. I have this tutorial series on how to cross MG Road in Bangalore, for example, and then I have videos of jellyfish, stingrays and pandas in hong kong, and a couple of public lectures that I shot.

I\’ve also got videos of my newborn niece, but they\’re at an undisclosed location (not on youtube).

  7. BTW, it looks like you\’ve got a single quote escaping bug in your blogging software. Looks like whoever wrote the tool wasn\’t quite sure what he was doing (it\’s a common bug).

Also, did you know that VSNL redefined the term broadband to include 256kbps as the lower bound?

  8. Video-blogs and Vloggers community. Imagine the amount of communication and sharing of ideas that can happen through visual media. I think youtube is brilliant.

  9. @ bluesmoon: Thx about the bug thingie. Will get it fixed asap!

@ Prasil: Yes YouTube is brilliant, undoubtedly. One day I’m sure I’ll be there too. It’s just that I’m not yet.

  10. Testing the comment’s apostrophe bug

  11. @ Aju: What’s a little brother good for if not to fix his sis’ blog problems?? ;) Thx my love!
