A Perfect Evening - Act One

The theatre. Definitive theatre would be Shakespeare, and so it was. I haven’t seen Macbeth, so it was that too. And it undoubtedly was excellent.

Alyque Padamsee has (brilliantly imo!) spun his version of Macbeth by making Lady Macbeth a Tantric who teams up with the witches to weave a spell on her husband. This is what he says:

“Nobody could explain how in one single night the witches make the prophecy that Macbeth will be king, Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to murder King Duncan and even the killing takes place. It came to my mind that Lady Macbeth could be a part of the Tantric circle and from that insight I began visualising the witches as instruments of Lady Macbeth”

Interesting, to say the least!

The actors were all brilliant - I thought Lushin Dubey who played Lady Macbeth was divine as were the weird sisters. And some very enthused kids leaving the theatre just in front of us vocalised “Oh WOW, wasn’t Macduff simply fantastic?!”. Yes, he was.

Imo, the play is a testament to theatre in Mumbai & theatre actors in Mumbai - they have not only pulled off Shakespeare, but pulled it off well.

Of course not everyone shares my opinion. Gowri Ramnarayan, who reviews it here, thinks that “It was a certainly a spectacle… but left little to visualise and was lacking in verbal magic”

She also ends with the line, “Macbeth and Lady Macbeth… their sivalinga was amusing” - if you don’t believe that, you should ask the guy who I went with; he couldn’t keep from lol-ing during that particular scene. Really.

:D

A Perfect Evening - Act Two

Dinner. My favorite - Italian, and so it was. I love to try out new places, and so that was done too. The venue was Monza - at Phoenix, Lower Parel.

Monza is a restaurant as well as a Wine Boutique. Everything is very tastefully done up in wood & glass.

Bloopers included the fact that my non-veg pasta arrived without the non-veg & was promptly sent back to the kitchen. And that the table we sat on moved when leant upon slightly, dropping a glass of water all over it. We were also unfortunate to have a family with some very noisy little children dining just next to us.

All these, would have under other circumstances ruined the magic of the perfect evening - but the company was just so, well, silly, that I didn’t really notice too much.

A Perfect Evening - Act Three

Was a song. Which was so perfect, we were laughing the whole way back.

Thank you :)

  3. @ Yogustus: :) It was a great night out - incidentally why did the lady in the sexy sari turn you on - because she looked sexy in it or because you wanted to try on the sari yourself??? (we can rule out hidden cross dressing tendencies if it’s the former ;) )
