The week was pretty crazy, full with work & other stuff - scroll down for a new entry I made called “Lokhandwala Lamentations” (I edited the timestamp of the entry to show the date I went, even though I only wrote it right now).

Given all that, I decided on a nice quite weekend at home with my mum. Dad was out of station & we enjoyed ourselves, chatting like two close friends & generally having a good time (in between of all the work she made me do that is!).

One of the things we did was watch a couple of DVDs (a great wedding among them :) ) Also caught “The Bone Collector”. It wasn’t a special choice, just happened to be on HBO & we got it right from the start which was great.

I hadn’t seen this one before & somehow thought it was like ‘Kiss the Girls’ and as such I was hesistant to watch it (don’t like watching films about sickos or where people are tortured).

I’m glad we did end up seeing it though because it didn’t turn out to be so bad - in fact we mystery buffs actually enjoyed it. We’re the types to watch CSI, Forensic Science & The New Detectives on the Discovery Channel - this movie was right up our alley.

More than the sicko killer (yes, there were a couple of really terrible scenes where I muted the volume & turned away from the screen) were the very interesting plot of how forensic expert Lincoln Rhyme (the gorgeous Denzel Washington, who looks fit to be licked though in a quadriplegic state) unravels the clues the killer has left behind at the scene of the crime. This he does by his bedside using the talents of Amelia Donaghy (the very beautiful Ms. Angelina Jolie) who “walks the grid” & teaches us a thing or two about Crime Scene Investigation while she learns from the expert Rhyme. There’s also a very subtle love story happening on the side (yup, you got it, bet Rhyme & Donaghy).

What I really liked though about this movie, is this particular scene between the vegetative Ryhme on his bed (he can move only his head & finger) & the stubborn Donaghy:

LR: They say we come into this world with a preordained destiny.
I don’t believe it.
Neither of my parents had more than an eighth-grade education.
Never read more than one book between them, not one.
I’ve read thousands.
I’ve written a dozen.

AD: What’s your point?

LR: My point is that destiny is what you make it.

Great point. Worth watching the movie if only to get that one.

  1. Fantastic movie that one! Of course if not for anything else at least for Angelina Jolie! :))

  2. three posts in a span of four days…vow…hope i cud be a voracious writer like u…even i liked the movie….Denzel is one of my fav….i had read one article about Denzel having the perfect symentric face among all the holywood actors…and yeah had to check dictionary for “Quadriplegic”…lol

  4. The most talked about movie now-a-days seems to be the “Da Vinci Code”.
I am sure we’ll get to see a post abt that on the blog.

  5. I wonder if we can get an unbiased review considering the topic of the movie. We know Mel is pro Church and with good reason, wonder if she will even see it. Personally I enjoyed the book for the way its written and plan to enjoy d movie as well.

  6. @Yash - Pro Church??

I dont think that a true believer would have a problem seeing the movie. its only someone who has a shaky faith and is scared of faultering at the slightest provocation who would avoid seeing the movie!

Havin said that I think DVC for me was a big dissapointment - if you are looking for a better book by Dan Brown read Angels and Demons!

  7. Yeah…but they should put up a disclaimer. There is a fine line between fact and fiction ..and people tend to believe whatever they watch.
So its a good thing that they agreed about the disclaimer.

  8. glad to see you think that way Alex, you reflect my thoughts exactly. one must believe in what one thinks is right and be prepared to debate his ideas and prove himself right. have read all his books, good writer. A&D deserves a movie as well.

havent seen DVC myself, but will go 4 it nevertheless.

  9. Wow talk about going off-topic…

Denzel Washington is always great in intense roles, I’d like to see him in some comedy of sorts… it’d be a nice change of pace.

So the ‘Code’ has not spared tvimh.com either, The hype!!

  10. @ Alex: Yeah, Ms. Jolie is super cute!

@ Sherriff: Think you put some “black tongue” thingie on me - my net went down for 3 days after this post, lol. Anyway, as usual I’ve been upto much & will post shortly on all :)

    @ Noo: :D

@ Ravi: You weren’t going to be right, then because of your comment here & subsequent comment, you turned out right. Life :)

@ Yash, Alex & Lothario: Have posted on the movie following this. Would rather no more talk about it on this blog (have linked to where you could continue discussion, if you really really must). Merci.

@ Van: Yeah life has a way to setting people tangent to things! Agree with what you said abotu DW, fantastic actor (not to mention gorgeous :D ) About the other thing, tvimh.com would have been happily spared, but sadly not.

  11. you guys must have ticked her off with the DA Vinci code thing. She even blocked her comments.

  12. Sooory! :(

  13. @ Rahul: Don’t worry, I have not been “ticked off” by anyone or anyone’s comments. The reason I don’t want any additional comments here on this blog is that I don’t want my blog to become a place to debate religious issues - have said this many times in the past.

Please read the post completely to understand why I put comments off & to see that I have also given two links to places where you can comment & debate if you like (check at the end of the post). You may also read my last comment (no 10) here on this post to understand this further.

@ my dear Alex: You have absolutely nothing to be sorry about! I respect your opinion and everyone elses who comments here even though I may not always agree with them.

That’s Thomas ‘Melody’ Jefferson for you!

You were missed at the bloggers’ meet.

  15. Hey Melody… looks like I missed all the action out here. :) Had read this post when you first posted it. Just wasnt of much in a commenting mood then.

As for the bone collector, I loved the movie. And I totally dig the characters of Lincoln Rhyme & Amelia (Sachs, as per the books). I’ve devoured all the Lincoln Rhyme novels so far… Just amazing how Rhyme pieces together the puzzles that come his way.

Coming to the DVC… well, frankly, Im not much of a religious person (I’m not an atheist!!!), and hence I’m not gonna comment on this particular case. I can make arguments both ways and I do not want to litter your blog with them. :)

  16. @ Vijay: lol, did Thomas Jefferson say that? Geez, and here I was thinking I’m an original! Thx for saying I was missed… I remember at the last bloggers meet how much you & I chatted ;)

@ Dev: Hey this is news to me - I didn’t even know there were more than one Lincoln Rhyme books! I did know about the Sachs thing though - apparently they changed it in the movie because it sounded too much like Sex with the American accent!

  17. I don’t think Jefferson said it, Volatire made this Quote though “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”-Voltaire

  18. Yup… there are 7 LR novels… I’ve read six of them ’til now. Apparently ‘The Cold Moon’ has been released too. Havent got hold of that one yet!
Check out the list here. And do read ‘em if you get the time and the enthusiasm.

  19. @ Rahul: Thx! Cool quote by Voltaire. Not sure I’d be soooooo cool (defending to the DEATH!) but definetely can respect things I don’t agree with

@ Dev: Hey thx for the link. Feel like I know LR a lot better now. Don’t know if I’ll ever get the time to read a novel - am still stuck with so many non-fiction books at home that I am so wanting to read but haven’t gotten down to.. Anyway, have my whole life ahead of me (however long/short that may be) so let’s see!

  20. @Rahul: Thanks Rahul!

  21. @melody: I never said I missed you! I said you were missed. Get a life. :/

  22. @ Vijay: Gee whizzzz…. ok then. Sorry! Will try to “get a life”

    :(

  23. You took that seriously didn’t you? ;)

  24. @ Vijay: So what you’re saying is that you don’t want me to get a life?? :-/
  25. No no, get one by all means. But not because I said so. You must realise that you need one. It must come from within you.
