New in town? Can I play with you?

It’s been a while now that I’ve been using my present PC - and though it’s served me well over the years I’ve had it, recently it’s been going kinda slow for no reason. First thought I’d reformat, then thought, what the heck, it’s been a while, I deserve a new computer (do lots of work from home & as well as lots of work online).

So after checking out a couple of options, I finally settled on what’s one of the best configs available in the Indian market today as far as I can tell im(not so)ho.

Here’s what I compromised on:
* I didn’t go in for is a DVD writer as I didn’t feel I need one right now; did get a DVD player/CD writer combo though.
EDITED 7.21pm Ok, apparently I didn’t compromise on this one! I did go in for the DVD writer after all. Ajay called & he was like “Of course you ordered the DVD writer”. And yes, before you say, I’m an idiot.

* I didn’t go in for a 3.0 GHz machine - decided that 2.66 is fast & more than what I need anyway.
* Haven’t gotten a TFT screen, though it was something I had decided to buy last time around. It’s more expensive than the regular CRT monitors & I thought what the heck, lemme save some money.

Here’s what I didn’t compromised on:
* Gotten the full 200 GB HDD. This was my core aim - to increase my HD space - am presently using a 40 GB and though options of 80 & 160 were available, thought I might as well go in for the largest available at this time.
* Pentium D (Dual Core 64Bit Processor). Basically “A Pentium D package contains two Pentium 4 Prescott dice (unlike other multicore processors and contrary to popular belief that both cores are on a single die)…” “… it appears that Pentium D will be the final processor to carry the Pentium brand name that has been at the forefront of Intel’s products since 1993″ From Wikipedia. More here.
*Another silly thing but very imp for me - Got an Optical Scroll Mouse. Have been using these forever and cannot possibly go back to using a regular mouse… that would be just waaaay too painful. Besides the price difference is too neglible to make a great difference.

Have to now call up my internet guys - have been using Exatt for a bit & am quite happy with their service thus far (anything’s better than Reliance Powersurfer with whom I suffered through last year). The new PC’s due to arrive tommorow morning so hopefully will have no problems with getting the Inty thing shifted to that piece. In case I’m not able to post though, you guys have a great weekend :)

Will see you soon, hopefully on my new baby!

  1. Damn I want one too…
    Enjoy your new toy

  2. I guess you could have gotten a DVD writer, the price diff aint that much. But hey, compromise is compromise. ;)

    New baby at home :D

P.S I see images now on Bloglines. :) (shudder)
    And Mel, I know it wasnt deliberate… ;) :D

  3. u should have gone in for the DVD combo. it hardly makes a diff. So sunday is comin. The plans are still on.we’ve gotta score that afternoon. So r u in?

  4. @ noojes: :D Thx!

@ dev & elvis: Sorry guys, apparently I made a mistake… Had ordered the DVD writer after all! Saw so many quotes & so many configs that I was a bit confused when I wrote this in the morning. And though a DVD writer was not a necessity for me, was talked into it. Like you both said, didn’t make too much of a diff price wise.

    (See Edit marked 7.21pm)

Eli: About Sunday, not sure yet, will confirm.

  5. I have a mac mini with a 320GB external hard disk and External USB DVD writer - works out really cool - can swing them between the mini and the laptop …

  6. Hey Melody, How u doin?
Cooool new PC…the dual core processor is BLAZING fast, I just got my new PC last month, Intel 3GHz 630.
Make sure you go in for LOADS of DDR Ram, preferably 1GB and above if you have the need for speed ;) You can never have enough RAM!!
It makes all the diff when running several apps at the same time. 256MB and 512MB tend to create a bootleneck and slow the system down.
Also get a good set of speakers with a sub woofer,I picked up the Creative
    2.1 with a sub-woofer and its absolutely fantastic. I’m a complete audiophile :)
Bye and have fun with your new toy!

  7. melody,u know how jealous I am? gurl u have no shame :P.Come what may I still love my comp(ahem,i have no choice..hehe)
yes bloggin again n hopefully wont wait for da next 5 months to update it ;)

  8. lol!!
i like the innocence in ur forgetting u bought the dvd writer!!

  9. @Mel, you do realize you didn’t compromize with a 2.66 instead of a 3GHZ?
    It’s a different processor :P

  10. @Andrew,

I got the Creative Inspire 5.1 5200, they don’t get any better ;) unless you go in for bose which I still can’t afford :D

  11. Damn! U got me! I must accept I got a little too obsessed with that Desi thing! LOL!

But hey me no forget”old” friends (pun intended hehe ), its just that I have been a little to o woozy over the past few days.

BTW what the hell do you need 200 gb of hard disk space for *gasps*

And all that blah blah about dual core processing….just sailed over my head. LOL

  12. Weird coincidence. I got almost exactly the same config installed yesterday at my home ! 200GB HDD (yes, you will need it, say if you have a camcorder and want to download the vid on your HDD). A dual-core I’ve heard is better than the 3GHZ HTT (I couldn’t make any sense of the Wiki on it !), and a 1GB RAM. And of course the DVD-RW. However, I did go in for the 17″ Samsung TFT LCD.

Enjoy your weekend and your ride !! Thanks.

  13. hi first time here.. and well clueless on the comp..tech..:)
enjoy ur new one and happy weekend

  14. Live feeds, Dual core processor getting techy here uh!

  15. @Alex,

200Gb, hmmm well madam thought the computer would run faster with 200 Gb ;)
Had to explain it’s just storage space (sorry Melody :P )

And at the rate she and her folks click photographs, I feel 200Gb will fall short in time.

Regarding PentiumD, yet another new product from Intel. You don’t need to worry your head much about it, but it does help to know that it is the latest in Intel’s series of processors.
Traditional CPUs have a single core. Having a dual core is better for heat dissipation. It also helps when you are running many applications at once because each core can handle a different application.
    Speed-wise you won’t notice much.

Then again, as we engineers say, in the end the main bottleneck in speed is usally your hard disk (the cdrom is slower but you don’t use it as much).

  16. WoW !! now thats a cool config. Hope you also went in for a good 5.1 channel soundcard and 5.1 speakers to complete the experience. I got a creative soundblaster live 24 bit soundcard + a creative inspire 4400 4.1 channel speaker set for a total of Rs.4600 ..n its worth every rupee.

  17. And…yeah..if you want faster n more secure hard-disk ..go in for a motherboard which supports RAID and SATA.

  18. So enough with staring at baby - put her to some use and start blogging…we’re waiting

    noojes

  19. do tell me what is your take on abortion…
    cheers

  20. damn, someone’s a bit of a geek.
thanks for dropping by the blog…i’ve been a lazy bastard, haven’t i? guess i could hide behind the “work excuse.”

  21. @ vinu & Andrew: Cool!

@ Pooh: Don’t be jay girl! And great to hear that you’re blogging again :)

@ gps: Don’t know if that’s called innocence or stupidity, but thanks for voting the former!

@ Alex: Glad you haven’t forgoten your old friends & hey, don’t like the “pun intended” bit X-(

Wanted the maximum storage I could get as I (01) work out off home a lot, hence I usually keep one drive one my home PC dedicated to work. (02) I do lots of work online, maintain many websites etc so have lots of that stuff stored on my home PC as well. This requires having lot more software on my home PC than the regular user too (earlier I would only need an internet browser & MS Office!!)

@ Bombay Addict: Inch pinch ;) ? And cool name, am quite addicted to this city myself!

@ Wise Donkey: Great to see you finally dropped in. As you can see, I’ve long since linked to you & enjoy your place!

@ Rahul: Don’t worry, am not even ‘a terminal junkie’ .. as this cat proudly states (!) and as Ajay will surely swear to!

  22. @ Ajay: You had to explain to me it was just storage space??? Ok Your Geekiness, explain this “..in the end the main bottleneck in speed is usally your hard disk”

@ Lothario: Lol, didn’t really require anything fancy when it came to speakers (though I can see a lot of you have!!). And yes, did get a motherboard which supports RAID and SATA.

@ Noojes: Lol babe.. had such a wonderful weekend (or Sunday at least). Will find time to blog hopefully a little later. Am so swamped with work.. decided to take a little break & reply to all the comments. Sigh..

@ Ben: I run a site called Glorify God (link on the right column of this blog) as well as an online community that has several discussion forums (including one of pro-life).

That being said, this is my blog, an online journal which I don’t want to turn into a debate ground.

Thx for the link. Unfortunately, it had highly graphic images & I really couldn’t get myself to go through your matter because of the images.

    Be blessed.

@ th3viru5: Geek & me? Awww come on. Ok maybe Ajay’s rubbing off on me ;) Good to hear from you after so long. And stop with the excuses & start blogging already!

  23. Hey Ajay, any advice on laptops?
