Let it Rain down on us!

As I write this, it’s thundering (oh ever SO loudly!) and lightening outside. The first, the very first rains of the season. Tommorow all the earth will smell fresh. All the trees with look green & clean. All the dust will be washed out. New life. Yes, I LOVE THE RAINS :) Apart from the fact that it reminds me my birthday’s coming up (one of the key reasons I love the monsoons!) is the fact that the rains are just soooo very romantic.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to take a walk in the rain with someone you love - not worrying about getting sick the next day… just enjoy the fact that you are together? Or maybe if you’re not so hot on achoo-ing the rest of the week, how about a walk under a common umbrella (awwwwwwwww)…

Sorry, can’t help it. Am an utterly butterly romantic. And the rains always bring out the worst in me :)

Edited 31/5: Here are the first offerings of the aforementioned rains. Click to enlargen

On a different note - praying for rain of a Spiritual kind to come down upon us on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th of the coming month at St. Andrew’s Grounds. It’s a program called “Celebrate Freedom”. If there are any Catholics who read this blog & are in Bombay during those days, do try & make it. If you’re not Catholic & still want to come, you’re welcome too. Entry free. Timings 6.30pm - 10pm on those 3 days (coming Fri-Sat-Sun).

Will end by thanking God for this amazing gift I got yesterday among other gifts (thank you to the earthly bearer)- a beautiful Italian rosary - actually made with Rose petals & if you smell it, you actually get the essence of roses! Not only that, but there’s a chalice on it with the host! Really beautiful indeed.

Why I’m chilling this weekend!

As usual there’s been so much happening - sometimes I have to remind myself to slow down & catch my breath. Still that’s what I love about Bombay, the fast pace life, the energy, the fact that everyone around you is moving fast, yelling, screaming, running, stressing, partying. Sometimes it gets too much but then take it away & you realise, hey, this is Bombay & I’m a paaka Bombayite .

Started the week off, Monday 21st by what else but being busy busy busy. Was pretty much in the city the whole day & also got to spend time in my favorite hotel (any guesses?):

Tuesday 22nd wasn’t much better except that I got home a little earlier from work. The prayer meeting was great. Jan gave a simple but powerful teaching on the “Fruit of the Holy Spirit” (one of the best I’ve heard). After the meeting went out with Ajay & had Pani Puri off the beach. Got a call from a beau who’s just back from the US of A (hmmm!!) & is sounding as yumm as ever. A good time to be single :)

Wednesday 23rd night went to Chinagate for dinner. Love the food there though I’m not big on Chinese food. The dinner was in honor of Madam Ana who has returned from long holiday (many countries in Europe) & was on a quick stopover in Bbay. True to South Bbay style of course (remember the other one who throws out Ritu Kumars?) Ana was all “Been there, done that” about UK ;) though she enjoyed most other places from what I heard!

Enjoyed the convo as usual - these guys are super - though Prem & I got dubbed as Fuddy & Duddy respectively. Ok then! Finished the night off with dessert & coffee at the Barista on Linking Road. Have a story about that too, but maybe some other time.

Thursday 24th was a fun day. Had two meetings in the city, both of which got cancelled & I found myself happy & bekaar enough to go to lunch at Charni road with Ana & Geh again.

Decided to try the train system - and lo & behold just outside Charni road station - on the bridge actually which one uses to cross over to the other side of the road, was a man lying horizontally. Just as I passed by he decided to exhibition himself. Like Indiana Jones, he quickly whipped out his thing & began furious action.

Luckily at the time I was wearing large cover-your-face dark shades & I just completely ignored him & walked by - I was also on my cell phone at the time (trying to figure out where to go) so it wasn’t too hard. My sis always taught me - it’s best to ignore these types of guys (& crank callers etc) they get pleasure when you react - in whatever way - so the best thing is to pretend you haven’t seen/heard anything.

Incident aside, enjoyed my lunch. It was bitter sweet leaving (had to rush home to do work) because I knew I’d not see Ana for a while. Parting is always such sweet sorrow.

In the night, I enjoyed the grande finale of American Idol Season 5. My personal favorite Chris Daughtry was eliminated two rounds earlier - Simon shared my deep shock. Honestly I think he was the best of the whole lot. I was kinda rooting for Kath to win the season after that (loved her ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’) so Taylor winning was another eyebrows up moment. He does seem like a nice person though. And I agree with Kath, who when interviewed later said she would love to go out with Ryan Seacrest. Boy wouldn’t we all.

Enjoyed all the additional performances - great to see all the finalists again & also all the other biggies - Prince was so totally rocking.

Incidentally am SO TOTALLY listening to Bono (how sexy will this guy always be??!!) & Mary J Blige singing “One” (originally only by U2 on their Achtung Baby album)- I love the lyrics, love their energy - it was SUCH a great (& good) surprise) to hear Elliot Yamin & Mary sing it at the AI final:

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can’t be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

After all the AI entertainment, I decided to drop into the JW Marriot (@ Mezzo Mezzo) to wish Noojes on her big 3-0 bday :)

Noo was all :D & in full form! As were the rest of the lot. Had a good time - originally intended to stay for a half hour or so but ended up reaching home only by 2 in the am. Check out the cake a triple X - signifying her age not her mentality (hopefully!). Learnt a few lessons like - “the one thing that makes life worth living is After 8 Gelato” and that musical greeting cards can turn even 30 yer olds into happy 3 year old DJ wannabees ;)

Friday 25th was busy busy busy again. Had the function in Indigo that I mentioned earlier. As a result smoozed with lots of the whos who in the fashion industry (great fun, yeah I can be tres pseudo at times, sue me). Also met up with one french guy who I knew a loooong time ago (around 7 years I think!). Knew lots of french guys then & found myself fantasizing about what a different life I’d have if I was married to cute french guy & smoozing around Paris… aaah!

Came home dead tired & almost didn’t end up going for the late late night show of Poseidon at the IMAX dome. Glad I went though, enjoyed the movie (review following) and the dome (as always). And yes, my girlfriend & I oogled over Josh Lucas (forget the french, want to marry this guy instead) the whole time. He the one from ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ which is also incidentally one of my fav songs & my ringtone for a while now.

So after this busy week I plan to just stay home on the weekend & chill out - plan half accomplished have chilled most of Saturday 26th barring a good 1 1/2 walk I took in the evening. Will end this post now, may read a little before I drop off to sleep. This is the life indeed :)

The Da Vinci Code

Published by Melody under Issues, Movie Reviews or Related

Before I start, a little apology to y’all, my net’s been down for the last three days. Will reply to all comments after this.

I did not plan to make this post (why give this movie any more publicity?!), but after reading some of the comments in the last post, thought I should make my position clear.

I have not read the book & I will not see the movie. I have read tons ABOUT the book and the lies it proclaims and as such have no inclination to read it myself. Likewise for the movie.

It’s not that my faith is going to be shaken if I see the movie - it’s more like this:

EXAMPLE
If you wrote a book about what a sick liar SOB my father is, then you’re sure as heck not gonna get me to read that book! Especially not when tons of others have read it & already written excellent “de-coders” (i.e. exposing the lies in the book)

So now, add to all this, now they’re making a movie of the book which calls my dad a sick lying SOB ! If I see that movie, it’s not going to change my opinion about my dad. Rather it would just hurt my sentiments terribly. HOW DARE THESE PEOPLE lie and make a sham about something & someone I care so deeply about?

My present position is to just ignore all of this though. I believe in what I believe to be the truth. And the truth does not change no matter what anyone may say about it - nor no matter how many people may stop believing it to be the truth.

About the movie, I think it’s a terrible thing that it’s out there. I’m not going to see it for the reasons I mentioned above.

So much - too much - has already been said about this movie (and from what I gather secular people who saw it didn’t even like it too much). No comments here. If you really want, you can post a comment at the Glorify God community here or here

The Bone Collector

The week was pretty crazy, full with work & other stuff - scroll down for a new entry I made called “Lokhandwala Lamentations” (I edited the timestamp of the entry to show the date I went, even though I only wrote it right now).

Given all that, I decided on a nice quite weekend at home with my mum. Dad was out of station & we enjoyed ourselves, chatting like two close friends & generally having a good time (in between of all the work she made me do that is!).

One of the things we did was watch a couple of DVDs (a great wedding among them :) ) Also caught “The Bone Collector”. It wasn’t a special choice, just happened to be on HBO & we got it right from the start which was great.

I hadn’t seen this one before & somehow thought it was like ‘Kiss the Girls’ and as such I was hesistant to watch it (don’t like watching films about sickos or where people are tortured).

I’m glad we did end up seeing it though because it didn’t turn out to be so bad - in fact we mystery buffs actually enjoyed it. We’re the types to watch CSI, Forensic Science & The New Detectives on the Discovery Channel - this movie was right up our alley.

More than the sicko killer (yes, there were a couple of really terrible scenes where I muted the volume & turned away from the screen) were the very interesting plot of how forensic expert Lincoln Rhyme (the gorgeous Denzel Washington, who looks fit to be licked though in a quadriplegic state) unravels the clues the killer has left behind at the scene of the crime. This he does by his bedside using the talents of Amelia Donaghy (the very beautiful Ms. Angelina Jolie) who “walks the grid” & teaches us a thing or two about Crime Scene Investigation while she learns from the expert Rhyme. There’s also a very subtle love story happening on the side (yup, you got it, bet Rhyme & Donaghy).

What I really liked though about this movie, is this particular scene between the vegetative Ryhme on his bed (he can move only his head & finger) & the stubborn Donaghy:

LR: They say we come into this world with a preordained destiny.
I don’t believe it.
Neither of my parents had more than an eighth-grade education.
Never read more than one book between them, not one.
I’ve read thousands.
I’ve written a dozen.

AD: What’s your point?

LR: My point is that destiny is what you make it.

Great point. Worth watching the movie if only to get that one.

Lokhandwala Lamentations.

Went all the way into Lokhandwala. My great friend wanted to try out this restaurant one of his friends was raving about - some place called Urban Tadkal or something. I really didn’t want to go so far out into the North but I haven’t seen this guy in a long time & he really wanted to go, so didn’t insist.

So Lokhandwala it was. Reached the said spot. Obviously the restaurant must have been good because it was jammed packed outside the place - full of kurta-pyjama wearing potbellied old uncles (sure they were chewing tobacco too) and the odd sari clad woman. I refused to get out of the car but my enterprising friend decided to check the waiting period anyway. When the dude told him it was 1 and a 1/2 hr waiting, he finally saw the light.

The light was however not very bright. We still had to eat in Lokhandwala since it was pretty late. Ended up at Kareem’s which is pretty close to UT. Kareem incidentally made his name & fame selling rotis at Bandra’s Carter Road at the wee hours of the morning. It was the Bade Miyan of Bandra & most people would end the night of partying with food at Kareem. Apparently it made him enough of dough to open this place at Lokhandwala.

Now at this point, let me tell you something which I find VERY VERY WEIRD. I cannot imagine how and why anyone (even a couple who may be very much in love) would want to sit side by side in a restaurant instead of across a table???!!!

And at this place there were two couple doing this very thing. To further annoy me, my friend comes and sits right next to me (yes, there were perfectly good seats across us) and refuses to pay heed to my pleas to go to the other side or allow me to do so (I was walled in, so had no choice but to stay put).

So this is the meal I had. Lokhandwala. Side by side, next to others sitting side by side. It was like some weirdo college hopefully-we’ll-make-out-after-this party.

And before you wonder, no, I didn’t. Had a very needed in this weather ice cream at Naturals & then went straight to bed.

Through my Eyes

Ajay always grumbles that I put too many pictures on my blog but I can’t help it - I’m a very visual person. I think in visuals & hence I write in visuals.

Anyway thought I’d further drive the point home by only using visuals for this entry. Well, mostly.

Friday 12th May

Special blessing was that my altar light was finally replaced. The light had fused & the door was jammed so I couldn’t get it changed for over a month. Had to get someone to come do it & honestly, what joy when it was done!

Also got to spend some time with my dearest Eli (though unfortunately not too much) at a new club that I’ve gotten membership at.

Ended the day with Music Ministry Pracs for the Pentecost Rally which is going to be held at St. Andrew’s School Grounds 2nd - 4th June 2006. It’s going to be good, so if you’re Catholic & if you’re in Bombay, do try & make it those days - it’s in the evenings - will post exact timings later.

Saturday 13th May

Spent most of the day with a couple who’s wedding ceremonies I’m organising at the Taj Land’s End, Grand Hyatt & other hotels (7 functions totally). They’re a proposal match & yet so much in love, it’s heart warming… yes, there’s hope for me yet!

Night went out with the folks to celebrate an aunt’s birthday at Trafalgar Chowk for dinner & then one of my cousin’s places for post dinner treats. Click to enlargen pic

Sunday 14th May

Was mother’s day. Spent most of the day with my mother & father wishing their parents :) Also spent lots of time with my darling god-daughter Sarah who was ever so smiley… excuse the hair, I can’t help playing with it ;)

Monday 15th May

Spent most of the day Monday in a top secret deal ;) (lol) which is looking good!

Tuesday 16th May

Spent in the city. Was busy with another funtion, this one at Indigo. Met up with a very very very sexy (to say the least) ex-supermodel from France & another darling whom I’ve not met in a long time. Good fun, looking foward to this event.

Weirdass Proposal Story

Ok, I promised it & here it is. Just don’t go shooting me with no virtual guns if it ain’t as entertaining as you thought it might be (perhaps you just had to be there like I was!). So here goes:

Remember all those horror movies which say….

…. this is my own private story.

Flashback Saturday 6th May. It’s a peaceful day, I’m all alone at home & just lounging around doing nothing much. The stage is set.

{{{{{{{{{{{TRING TRING}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

“Hello?”
“Is that **?” (woman on the other end asks for my mother)
“No she’s not at home, may I know who’s calling?’
“Ah! (loudly) is that Melody then?”
“Yes (I’m still trying to figure out who this woman is), may I know who’s calling?”
“I’m ** (tells me her name) Then a split second later says: you don’t know me”
Before I can say anything, she continues
“I’m a friend of **” (another name) but you don’t know her either”

I’m thinking Geez woman what the heck do you want with me????

I say ” Can I help you with something?”
She goes “HAHAHAHAHA” (I’m more put off that anything now, hate dealing with weird people). “I think I can help you”.

???

“You see I have a boy for you”

I’m totally speechless by this point. Last thing I expected from weirdo aunty is to start matchmaking on the phone. Don’t know if she interpreted my silence as a Go Ahead, but from this point she was almost unstopable & I almost couldn’t get a word in edgewise.

“You see I’m not a matchmaker - though I have done this before - and that worked out pretty well - I’m actually really good - I’m just doing this to help people - And ** mentioned to me that you were not married and this boy is really good - I wonder who told ** you were not married - perhaps your mother approached her?” (I wanted to say my mother never has & never will go to matchmakers, but as I said, couldn’t get a word in)

Madam continued:
“But I don’t need to talk to your mother - we can talk as friends - today anything goes - The boy’s a ** (tells me his profession) and he stays in ** (names area of place in Bbay) - he has a pretty big house too (perhaps I’m supposed to oooh ahhh at this point?) - oh by the way, what are you supposed to be? - not that it matters nowadays - but what are you supposed to be?”

Madam actually stops now.

I’m actually unsure of what to say (kudos to m’am; not many ppl have managed that feat!)

I repeat: “What am I supposed to be???” - my eyebrows are sky-high.

“Yes, not that it matters. The boy’s a ** (tells me his cast - I understand now what she was asking for) - what are you supposed to be? (I’m dying to say something like - I’m supposed to be Goan but I’m a kickass Mangalorean with some East-Indian Anglo blood, but I can’t because she’s still not letting me speak)

Not waiting for an answer to her question, she fires another one at me “And what level of education have you completed?”

I must have been lulled by her persistent voice, because I answer almost obediently “I’m an M.Com”

“ooooohh, ooookkkk (all said very very sorrowfully), ookkk this is not a problem (though by her tone implying this is a BIG GIGANTIC problem).”

“This is not a problem?” I repeat … I’m almost laughing now :D

“No no, he’s a ** (repeats profession of boy), so naturally he wants a highly educated girl, you know not some SSC type”

Now I want to totally whack weirdass aunty.

“An M.Com,” (I say, in a most dignified manner) “is a Masters degree in Commerce. You can do one only after a Bachelor’s degree. In any case (now I’m just plain showing off, my pride’s taking a beating after all) I’m doing a second Masters and probably a PhD after that” (at this point, let me mention, chances of my PhD are slim to nothing)

“A PhD?” she asks.

“Yes” I say & want to press her under my thumb.

“Oh in that case you’ll want to stay in Bombay beyond May”

HUH????

Aloud: “Sorry?”

“He’s leaving for Australia on the ** of May”

The crazy woman apparently wants me to marry boy I have never met, in less than a month, and then go off to Australia with him!!! Help me Lord.

“I’m not looking at going out of Bombay” I say trying to shut her up once for all. Unfortunately, again I fail.

“What??!”

She goes a tad psycho on me now… Her voice gets a little tough…

“Listen, I don’t know you, but you should think this through, the boy’s a very good boy, he’s…”

I actually cut the woman off now…. (who does she think she’s getting tough with ??!!)
“I am absolutely not interested in leaving Bombay”.

“Ok fine. Then let’s call the whole thing off right now” (what whole thing - and what was on to be called off???)

“Ok!” I say - anything to get her off the phone!

She hangs up phone.

And then after a few seconds I burst out laughing till my sides hurt.

Bowling & more Bs

Published by Melody under "Dear Diary" type entries

Today was the “Great Bowling Challenge”. Eli had been preparing us for days (over a week actually!) and was all pumped to win.

The players were - have noted our nicks which appeared on screen (what can I say, we’re a juvenile bunch!):
Devdas (Clint)
Cutey (Aly, only because we don’t know her well enough to coin something nasty!)
Grandpa (Eli)
Grumbler (Del)
Aunty (Ajay)
Moley (Me… & pls. don’t ask why)

We were playing for individual high scores & teams scores as well.

I was kinda not sure I even wanted to go bowling - after great difficulty have managed to grow my nails & I had just neatly painted them. Still was persuaded into it all & praise God, did’t break any nails (though will def have to redo the polish).

Anyway back to the game; here is a post game commentary:

It went pretty much as expected - the main & only real competition was between Devdas & Grandpa. Aunty, who has done pretty well for himself in the past proved to be in a sorry condition, losing out even to the Grumbler! There was also lots of action for the last place, especially in the beginning of the Challenge, with Cutey & Moley playing equally badly.

As luck would have it though, Moley soon picked up her game, a couple of great shots & even a strike & she ended just a few points shy of Aunty (Cutey was less than half her score).

Moley was vindicated. Must bring Cutey for future games, she noted to self.

Oops, the brilliant commentator that I am, forgot to say - Devdas won. And the Grandpa-Grumbler team took first place in team.

Now for the winner’s spoils.

The winners were supposed to treat the rest to dinner. Unfortunately for me, Del chose the Gymkhana to have dinner in as there was a “Triple B Night” going on. (The Triple Bs, I’m told stands for Bingo-BBQ and the third could be Booze/Boys/Babes, Geez how ‘creative’ are these guys?).

I was forced into going to prove I’m not a snob - which I’m not - honestly you don’t have to be a snob not to want to attend one of these silly thingies (Bingo!!!! eessh!). Anyway, I had to hear hour long stories from Grumbler to Cutey saying I wouldn’t show up, so I thought it’d be easier to make an hour’s appearance & then move on from there (which is pretty much what we did, so it wasn’t too bad).

Mercifully by the time we reached (the others went ahead of us), all Bingo etc was over & done with & the place looked like a Christmas dance, albiet for the fact everyone was in casual clothes.

The live band was pretty decent & the music was mainly jive & waltz … it was such a total mac scene!!! Aunties & Uncles everywhere, unfortunately many whom I recognized & was forced to go talk to & be pleasant to. Sigh.

Despite myself & despite an incident which occurred on the way to the gym, I actually enjoyed myself a bit. Of course, not enough not to run off at the first chance ;)

Went off to dinner at Independence Café. Had the Chicken a la Kiev (which I mostly have when I go there, they really do a good job) with some fab mashed patato. Recipe here.

Came home & slept. Bowling, pushing (see previous post), weird gym dances & dinner included, it had been a long day & didn’t take much time for me to crash.

Note to all: Am a tad busy this week, but stay tuned, have a great proposal story to share :D

Hope there’s no Pushing Involved (Part 2)

Published by Melody under "Dear Diary" type entries

In case you’re wondering where Part 1 was, read this post at Zoxcleb’s blog (he comments here as ‘gps’). It made me laugh out loud & I even left a comment about what a panvati he obviously was.

Tsk tsk.

Today on the way to the bowling arcade, Aj told me he’d have to fill fuel in the bike as it was running kinda low. Somehow it made me think of the blogpost I just mentioned & I said aloud to him “I hope there’s no pushing involved” (where after I narrated the blogpost to him).

So we reach the bowling alley – we have enough to fill on our way back (apparently). Only problem, when we were done with the bowling, Aj couldn’t get the bike started.

It appears that in addition to the fuel being low, we now have a leaky pipey thingie which is slowly draining the remaining fuel.

So, as you should have figured when you read this blogpost title, there was a little pushing involved :)
Of course, it wasn’t me. While Aj pushed the bike to the nearest mechanic (mercifully there was one just around the corner), I followed taking pictures (for our blogs of course!!)

By the time we got out of there & made for home, we got stuck in heavy Sunday evening Juhu traffic. Then we had to go fill the fuel up again (leaky pipey thingie problem was not fully resolved).

So we’ve made it half past Juhu, have to turn all around again in heavy traffic (mercifully being on bike is a lot faster than a car, though it’s doubtful whether I’ll do it again in a hurry – all those fumes can really kill you (not to mention the dirt spoils your hair).

Reached the pump & Aj spends an eternity trying to sort out pipe himself after filling fuel. I needless to say, stand on the side & take pictures.

Mercifully after all this we make it back home (& I even convince him to take the bike to the Gym later).

One has to stop and wonder why this all took place? Was it Z’s black tongue that did him in? Do I have a black tongue myself? Was it the fact that we said “hope there’s no pushing involved?” – the statement, that did us in???

The Curse Continues. If you need to post Part 3, feel welcome.
