Contains spoilers. Don’t read if you intend seeing the movie. Then again, I don’t recommend seeing the movie, so go ahead.

The Chillis have spoken! The movie according to them is one you should stay away from. Unless, that is, you are:
(a) Bored to death & nothing can bore you more
(b) In dire need of a good laugh. Though that comes only in the end too, when you realise you have wasted good time & money seeing riduculous film
(c) Ash fan. Then again, even Ash fans are going to have a hard time appreciating this film.

I love watching Indians act in English films. I don’t know why, but I just do. Yet even that wasn’t enough for save this sinking ship of a film. Seriously!

There was no story - at best it was a watery silly spin off something Indianish (love of spices!). But to think that the spices talk & that they are magical…. ooooohhhh ahhhhh.

Ash is this young Indian girl who has landed in San Fransico on a mission - to give spices to people in need to help them. There are many “Rules” her life is bound by. Of course in the due course of the film she breaks all of them.

The whole film is monotonous. She keeps narrating the film as it’s going on and it’s a surreal way of reading a very stupid book. I can’t believe Dylan McDermott actually starred in this film. After ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and ‘The Practice’ where he’s brilliant, this is a serious no-no on his bio.

The star of the film is undoubtedly the Red Chilli. It was brilliant right from the start where it told Ash to stay away from Dylan (if she’d listened the rest of us wouldn’t have had to sit through this film). It also played a major role in the very end of the film… instead of a bed of roses (I love you Bon Jovi) Dylan & Ash are on, you guessed it, a bed of red chillis.

Ow.

Kinkiness at it’s best? Storytelling at it’s worst.

  1. Haven’t seen the movie yet?. Reading your synopsis of the movie, it seems like the movie is a rip off from the French movie Chocolat.

  2. Hey Melody…have been reading ur blog since last 3 4 months ..its a great feeling everytime i visit ur site.u write well keep it up :)

  3. Hmm… I think I’ll go waste some money on this movie, because I fulfill ur first two conditions:

    (a) Bored to death & nothing can bore you more
    (b) In dire need of a good laugh.

And no, I’m not an Ash fan. :)

One more thing… avoid the Pink Panther. Saw it yesterday (Thank you Adlabs). The best thing about the movie was Henri Mancini’s title track. I love it!!! :D

  4. @ Mario: Perhaps, I haven’t seen Chocolat. Though after seeing this movie, I have a feeling that it can’t possibly be any worse!

@ Reshma: Hey girl :) Nice to know you’ve been following the blog! Thx for what you said about the blog & hope to hear from you more often!

@ dev: lol to you fulfilling the first two conditions. As for the Pink Panther, already saw it today. Was quite ok, lots of slapstick but enjoyable nonetheless. Review will follow. And yeah, loved the title track & loved the PP shaking his derrier.

dead ant dead ant, dead ant, dead ant dead ant dead ant, dead ant dead ant….. dead ant….

  8. uhh ohh ohh….im gonna watch it!!!! i dint read the post ;)

  9. Sent to me via email:

    Er…

Glad you told me to stay away from Mistress of Spices. Think Dylan McDermott is a pretty good actor so thought I’d catch it. But here’s the rub (if you’ll pardon the atrocious chilli pun) – It was Dermot Mulroney in My Best Friend’s Wedding. Not Dylan McDermott.

And for that little bit of trivia, which will undoubtedly help remove the egg on your face (now that, that, is kinky. After all, anyone can roll around with a chilli), you can buy me vast quantities of alcohol.

PS – also love the BJ song.

  10. @ Aj: “Talk to me spices!” Darn think it’ll be AGES before we get that out of our heads!!!

@ Jo: He didn’t play too big a role. It was just another supporting actor. He wasn’t bad though.

@ Lothario: lol… she’d have to be, considering who she’s seeing!!

    @ gypsy: Ok girl.

@ My emailing friend: Wrt your mail titled “Much as I love you, you’re wrong” - Thx for correcting me. Perhaps it was the DMs that confused me? Nonetheless, I was wrong. But apparently you love me, so the world’s not such a bad place after all eh ;)

Stay tuned, move reviews to come :)

    And huh, what BJ song????
