Just heard about the earthquake and the tsunamis that ensued. Got this pic of Sumatra (the epicenter of the quake) online. It was titled “The Dream Island”. Some dream huh? The nightmare-esq stories that are coming out of survivors are heart wrenching.
On the positive side, the youth whom we dropped off for Chennai (also affected by the Tsunamis) seem to be all ok.
Sumatra Before the Disaster:
Got this picture from the CNN Website. It shows a devasted Christian area in Sri Lanka:
“A tsunami is a giant wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption…
Energy from the quake creates the initial wave, which splits into two — one wave moves out into the ocean while the other heads toward the shore. Most tsunamis do not create giant breaking waves on shore. Instead, they generate very fast and strong tides that make sea level rise quickly.”
